Science and Religion Together
German Wallace offered a major that intended to teach students how the natural world functions, including how God was at the root of it all. It is almost unfathomable today to consider such a complementary relationship between religion and science. However this was fairly normal in the education of this time, despite being so foreign to us today. Also, one did not focus on one particular science, but rather received an all-encompassing education in the various sciences.

Translation (and other) Notes:
- As one can see, in this era, religion and science were not completely estranged, and there was still an active interest in making the two complimentary.
- Bourdon means burdens, which we translate as proofs, as in burden of proof.
- Years had trimesters rather than semesters.
- Natural Philosophy was initially what science was called, with a focus on early conceptions of physics and biology. It studied the natural world. In this sense, it is an scientific field that sought to unify the idea of "the spirit" with "nature". There was also a greater focus on theoretical knowledge -- see the Theology major and notes on topics such as Metaphysics.
- Understanding God through Nature showed the intention to mix science and spiritualism, to include God within mankind's understanding of the natural world. This idea persisted since ancient times until the twentieth century. (This is somewhat speculative, as these courses appear to have been somewhat uncommon.)
- Natural Sciences focused on chemistry and physics, as one would anticipate.
- Natural History focused on biology and geology, the history of the physical earth.
- Logic is its own mathematical study. It would have started similar to contemporary discreet mathematics, but on a far more in-depth scale.
- Philosophy of the Soul is the study of "the Being of the Self", similar to metaphysics. It is philosophy dealing with self-awareness, consciousness, and what makes something alive or human. It also probably involved some early study of one's individual psychology.
- Apologetics is the use of reasoning skills and writing with the intent of defending (Christian) doctrine.
- Although German Wallace was a fairly progressive school for its time, given its foundation occurring at the end of the Civil War, there was still some discrimination against female students. They were given the opportunity to take higher mathematics courses, but were at the same time perceived as intellectually inferior and given the coice to too choose to take French instead. Also the word Frauenzimmer has changed to be derogatory over time, which makes its use here a little bit questionable.
